Apple has just started selling the unlocked version of its iPhone 4 which is starting at $649. This price is set for the 16GB Smartphone while the one with 32GB is selling for $749. Both versions are available in black or white. You can have black within three business days and white within three to five days.

The Unlocked phone is the best choice if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad. With an unlocked phone you are not bound into a 2 year contract with the supplier. On the other hand, you can’t enjoy the subsidized rates (from AT&T or Verizon) which are $199 and $299.

“The unlocked iPhone 4 needs and active micro-SIM card that you obtain from a supported GSM wireless carrier”, states Apple. In the U.S., that would include AT&T and T-Mobile, but the T-Mobile iPhone runs over the slower 2G EDGE network as their 3G network is incompatible with the iPhone. So it limits the data transmission speed of the phone. Also, the iPad users can’t have their micro-SIM card in the iPhone 4.

Apple won’t ship the unlocked iPhone internationally, but those who buy the phone in the U.S can use it elsewhere.
